Carton of mostly 1930s material with folios of newspaper clippings, various photographs including a large-format print of Charles Ulm & "Faith in Australia", letters with some content re aviators, etc. Fascinating lot.
Carton of mostly post-WW2 material with large variety of domestic and international flights up to 1970s including illustrated covers, cinderella labels & signed items, also Rocket Mails including 1937 cover signed "AH Young" and later 'Europa' flights, Hovercraft & Balloon mails, a small group of Australian Antarctic including 1963 Expedition signed postcard and some registered covers, a few loose labels, some minor duplication, huge AAMC catalogue value, condition fine.
1914 (July 16) Melbourne-Sydney AAMC #3 Maurice Guillaux Official Souvenir PPC flown on first Australian official airmail with 1d Roo tied 'AUSTRALIAN/MELBOURNE/16-JUL-1914/VIC/AERIAL MAIL' d/s and 'SYDNEY/18JL14/64' arrival alongside, some edge faults and hinge marks on reverse, Cat $750.
1917 (Feb 15) Mount Gambier-Melbourne AAMC #10 Basil Watson PPC with Shell Benzine advert to South Yarra with fine 'MT GAMBIER/STH AUST' cds and KGV 1d red tied by 'AUSTRALIAN/ MELBOURNE/27FEB1917/VIC/AERIAL MAIL' arrival d/s, minor blemishes, Cat $600. Message states "... May Aviation succeed in Peace as it has in helping to down our enemies".
1917 (Feb 15) Mount Gambier-Melbourne AAMC #12 intermediate Basil Watson PPC with 'HAMILTON/15FE17/VIC' cds and KGV 1d red tied 'AUSTRALIAN/MELBOURNE/27FEB1917/ VIC/AERIAL MAIL' arrival d/s, Cat $600. The message states "... Basil Watson arrived here this evening came from Warrnambool in about 29 minutes it was too windy to land at the showgrounds ...".
1919 (Nov 12) England-Australia AAMC #12a intermediate from Dutch Indies endorsed "Per Aerial Post/Vickers Vimy Rolls/Capt Ross Smith" with a very fine example of the Ross Smith vignette applied on arrival tied 'FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/26FEB1920/GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA' oval d/s with another strike alongside and faint blue three-line 'PER/VICKERS VIMY AEROPLANE/TO AUSTRALIA' cachet, Cat $5750. Martin Eichele Certificate (2011).
Tom Frommer in 'The Ross Smith Stamp & Its Postal History' records only 15 of the 364 covers carried as having originated at Soerabaja. This cover is Frommer #113 & is known to be from Dolly Dixon to a friend in NSW.
1920 (July 30) Melbourne-Traralgon AAMC #47 KGV 1½d brown 'Star' Envelope cancelled on arrival with 'TRARALGON/30JL20/VIC' cds, purple/yellow 'By Herald Aerial Delivery' vignette tied to the reverse by 'HERALD & WEEKLY TIMES/RECEIVED/30JUL1920' office time-clock d/s, light fold not affecting label otherwise fine condition, Cat $2000.
1920 (Aug 10) Melbourne-Hamilton AAMC #48 cover with KGV 1½d brown tied 'HAMILTON/2/11AU20/VIC' arrival cds, brown 'Herald/Air Mail' label (Frommer #3a) affixed alongside, a few faults, Cat $1800. Ex Tom Frommer with 'TF' cachet on back. [The AAMC states approx 700 items flown but that "...only about 50 covers now exist". However, the number surviving is significantly less with many having been destroyed for the label. A postcard with the label not tied sold at the Prestige auction of 18.11.2006 for $2070]
1922 (April 17) Geelong-Melbourne AAMC #64 cover carried on the return flight of the Herald & Weekly Times experimental service with KGV 2d red and blue 'Herald/Air Mail' label (Frommer #5a) affixed alongside tied by Geelong machine cancel, some minor aging marks, Cat $1500.
1929 (Aug 20) Streaky Bay-Adelaide AAMC #144 intermediate endorsed "Port Lincoln to Cowell" carried by Eyre Peninsula Airways Ltd service return leg with KGV 1d green and ½d orange tied 'COWELL/20AU29/SA' d/s on arrival, signed pilot "JA Mollison" on face, Cat $600. Only 2 flown on this leg.
1929 (Aug 20) Streaky Bay-Adelaide AAMC #144a intermediate endorsed "Elliston to Adelaide" carried by Eyre Peninsula Airways Ltd service return leg with KGV 1½d red cancelled on arrival, signed pilot "JA Mollison" on face, Cat $600. Only 3 carried on this leg.
1933 (July 2) Sydney-Brisbane AAMC #315a intermediate cover carried on Australia-England survey flight per Imperial Airways "Astraea" with KGV 2d & 3d Airmail tied Sydney d/s but bold 'AIR SERVICE/NOT AVAILABLE' boxed cachet in rosine on face, signed pilot "HG Brackley" on face, Cat $400.
1933 Souvenir Postcards flown to New Zealand by 'Faith in Australia' #348 all signed CP Ulm one dedicated on back by EA Crome in 1971 and the others all subsequently flown again, one by 'Faith in Australia' 1934 Aust-NZ-Aust official airmail #371a signed GU Allen & RN Boulton, another on Duke of Gloucester flight #468 specially overprinted and signed GU Allen, B Shiel & RN Boulton, the last by 1937 inaugural PanAm Trans-Pacific connection Sydney-Hong Kong-Guam #728b sent registered with Hong Kong & Manila transits, illustrated 'HONG KONG TO GUAM/...' flight cachet & Guam arrival b/s, fine condition, Cat $1375.
NEW SOUTH WALES: 1930s accumulation of internal, inter-state and some international flights including intermediates, variety of vignettes & a few signed, noted 1933 #330 Aerial Pageant postcard, 1934 #467 Duke of Gloucester numbered envelope, illustrated covers for 1935 #537a Sydney-Hobart & 1937 #734 Sailplane flights, 1938 Clouston & Ricketts return flight to UK, also KGV 1½d 'Star' envelope to Melbourne with 'Angel' vignette tied and boxed 'BY AIR MAIL' cachet, 1933 'Broken Hill Flood' cover & three 'Australian Air League' envelopes including one commercially used in 1940, overall condition fine.
