1839 Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge map "The Panjab [sic] with Part of Afghanistan, Kashmeer, Sinde &c" (330x410mm), with coloured borders. 'Buhawalpoor' [sic] occupies most of the lower half. Affixed within a lightweight card folder, a few minor peripheral faults. With a reduced copy used as a frontispiece.
1839 entire officer's letter to Calcutta endorsed "Camp at Bahawulpore the 3rd of January 1839" at top & "Major Thompson" at lower-left, good strike of the boxed 'CALCUTTA/1839 January 26/ Bearing ("15")' b/s. The writer, of the Left Wing Bengal European Regiment, speaks of "advancing in this villainous country...very thinly populated and the whole of it either jungle or waste except in the vicinity of towns...Burns has secured the Bolan Pass for us by means of money...Bahawulpore is a large city of mud houses surrounded by a mud wall..." and concludes "You must excuse my sending this letter with the postage bearing for our post master does not know what to charge on letters going from our camp." A marvellous First Afghan War letter of exceptional quality and the earliest recorded postal item from Bahawalpur. Ex Gerald Sattin (realised £1344 at auction in London in 1992). [With a complete transcription]
