1870-1871 Fiji Times Express Quadrillé Paper 1d SG 1 with full printer's rules & 3d SG 2 with printer's rules at left & base tied to small pieces by 'SUVA/DE21/1870/=FIJI=' or 'SUVA/DE4/ 1870/=FIJI=' cds, Cat £7500. ̃̃On the face of it, both stamps are genuinely used with contemporary datestamps. However, they are of a type not recorded. Interestingly, they are different, the 'S' and the dateslugs being of different sizes! Both illustrated by Rodger & Duberal facing p21 where described as "forged cancellations on genuine stamps". But one has to ask why would anyone do this to valuable unused stamps??? It is generally accepted that the PO at Suva opened in December 1871 but...??? These stamps were 'discovered" in 1961 and it appears that no other examples are known. Punters required!

P

1876-1877 Script 'VR' Underprints Norman Fairbairn's extensive study/display of singles, strips & blocks of 4 from the printer's trial sheets including Double Prints, Misplaced and/or Inverted 'VR' or Surcharges, Omitted Surcharges, Imperforate & Partly Imperf Errors etc, a couple of 1d items additionally with the Void Corner, condition a bit variable but generally fine to very fine. A fascinating lot that demonstrates the production difficulties experienced by the NSW Government Printing Office.̃̃Early writers denigrated such material as "printers waste" and it has consequently been spurned by many collectors. However, such disparaging remarks long pre-date the release of the archival holdings of the major security printers in Great Britain. Is there any real difference in status, importance or collectability between this Fiji material and the trial proof sheets of De La Rue, Bradbury Wilkinson & Waterlow? Given that the Fiji proofs were not produced in England, it may be argued that this class of proof has more going for it than the generally better-regarded British-produced trials and plate proofs. In our opinion, it is time to bury the "printer's waste" slur and properly characterise this material as being of legitimate proof status. (Qty 109 items: 161 units)
