UP TRAIN 8: Type 2 ('TPO 8') two very fine cancels of 27NO12 on Price Griffith & Co cover to Melbourne with scarce combination franking of 1d pink with 'PG/M' commercial perfin & Tasmania 'ONE PENNY' on 2d, minor blemishes. Rated RRRRR: the only recorded usage on cover. Ex JRW Purves & Max Watson: acquired at the Prestige auction of 7.5.2013 for $529. Illustrated at page 80. [Most multi-State frankings are overtly philatelic whereas this is clearly commercial mail. Interchangeability of State issues was allowed from October 1910]

Rated RRR: the earliest of 11 usages on cover recorded. Illustrated at page 76. [This is the earliest recorded cover, and the only pre-1894 cover f rom the North Gippsland Line ]

DOWN TRAIN 9: Type 1 (22mm Octagon) light cancel of AU18/79 on Bell 2d on cover to Benalla with Melbourne b/s, pencil note "is 9/checked/JRWP" (Bill Purves), minor blemishes. Rated RRR: the earliest of 12 usages on cover recorded. Illustrated at page 76. [Purves wrote about this cover "Does it mean that TPO 9 was originally allocated to [the Wodonga] Line? ". That theory is supported by the absence of any Gippsland marking. However, it could have been missorted at Melbourne onto the North Gippsland Line where the error was noted & the cover transferred to the next Up train, perhaps from Dandenong or Warragul]
