1905 Maroney Undivided Back PPC ('Nouvelles Hebrides - Premiere habitation d'un colon') to New Zealand with NSW 1d tied by 'NEW HEBRIDES/4DE/1905/VILA' cds, stained on the address panel. Ex Jim Crompton.
1906 real photo PPC of a European residence to New Zealand with NSW 1d tied by 'NEW HEBRIDES/ 4JA/1906/VILA' cds, message headed "Arthursleigh/Undine Bay/New Hebrides/1.1.06" states "...What do you think of our little home? The sheds to the left are drying rooms for coffee...We are 500ft above sea level...Let me know if you get this, as these cards are apt to go astray..." Ex Jim Crompton. RPSofL Certificate (1975). [Undine Bay is on the north coast of Efate, some 40km north of Vila by coastal road]
The writer was Mrs Kate Anderson, wife of Rev William Anderson. In 1905 they left mission work to settle at Undine Bay. After running a plantation & trading post, they rejoined the mission in the 1920s. Our thanks to Roland Klinger for this information.
1907 New Caledonia PPC ('Marchands de porcs/Pig Dealers') with message headed "18-5-07 Vila New Hebrides", to Cornwall with GB 1d cancelled on arrival at London JY8/07, 'DULOE' arrival cds, minor blemishes. Ex Jim Crompton. [Between 1887 & 1908, a Franco-British Naval Commission operated in the waters of New Hebrides & New Caledonia. This card was probably from a crew member aboard HMS 'Psyche' which made bi-monthly visits to Vila. New Hebrides stamps were first issued in Oct 1908. This item is much scarcer than cards & covers with NSW stamps cancelled at Vila, that routinely sell for $1000+ each]
