FIJI: 1872-73 'Fiji Times' newspapers, covering a tumultuous time in Fiji's history, during the era of the Kingdom of Fiji 1871-74. The newspapers report on native labour, South Sea slave trade or 'blackbirding', cultivation of cotton and the first years of sugar plantations; Australian, European & American news, shipping news, classified advertisements, Post Office mails and rates, a failed hanging, cannibalism, Fiji government not recognised by England, native uprisings and reprisals, debates regarding the King ceding Fiji to Queen Victoria. Some of the newspapers have postal markings but stamps removed or damaged.
