1860-61 Small Star 'REGISTERED' (6d) olive-yellow SG 11, exceptional centring & full perfs, superb 'CANC[ELLED]' handstamp, Cat £10,000. An oustanding rarity of the Australian Colonies. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2005) states "Genuine in all respects. Extremely rare as only six made".
Six examples each of the so-called "Ormond Hill Specimens" were produced by Perkins Bacon for all of "their" Colonies at the request of Rowland Hill's nephew and gifted to him, action that resulted in the Agent for the Crown Colonies terminating Perkins Bacon's printing contracts. 75 different stamps were involved, of 20 British Colonies and four stamps of Chile. The 'CANCELLED' h/s was applied to blocks of 6 that were later separated, often with scissors or a blade, resulting in many of the individual stamps having trimmed perfs on one or two sides.
For Queensland, the recorded stamps are 1d x4 (all with some perfs trimmed), 2d x4 (2), 6d x3 (2), 1/- x4 (1) and 'REGISTERED' x4 (3). A full "set" is in the Royal Collection. The stamp offered here is by far the finest of the 'REGISTERED's and is one of only seven of the Queensland stamps that has full perfs. It is at least the equal of Colonel Harrie Evans' 1/- that sold at the Prestige auction of 4.5.2002 for $10,640. At that time, these items Cat £3500 each. [See also Lot 854 for a copy of 'CANCELLED by Perkins Bacon' by Peter Jaffé]
