CANADA - PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND: 1889 (May 13) cover "Via Sanfrancisco" with Sidefaces 2d & 6d tied by Brisbane cds, 'WINDSOR ONT/CANADA' transit & 'KINROSS/PEI' arrival b/s, minor blemishes & truncated at left. [The rate is problematic: Via San Francisco was 8d from 1874, 9d from some time before 1884, & 7d from 11.1.1884. However, 8d was the rate via England]

FRANCE: 1882 cover to Paris endorsed "via Melbourne" with First Sidefaces 2d & 6d x2 tied by Brisbane duplex, Marseilles transit of 1/SEPT/82 on the face & a flurry of French b/s, redirected to England with superb 'CAMBRIDGE/SP4/82' arrival b/s, minor blemishes. [From 3.8.1876, there was a 1/1d rate via Italy. We expect the 1d overpayment was for a late fee]
FRANCE: 1883 (July 9) cover to Paris with First Sidefaces 1d (defective) & Second Sidefaces Lined Background 6d pair tied by BN '339' (rated RRR) of 'MACROSSAN BRIDGE' (cds alongside; RRRR; ERD), Townsville transit b/s & French 'MODANE A PARIS/3/SEPT/83' TPO transit cds on red on the face. PO 25.7.1882; renamed Burdekin 14.3.1899. [Macrossan Bridge was built in 1881 to carry the railway line to the Charters Towers goldfields. It is about 1200km NNW of Brisbane]
FRANCE: 1886 (July) cover to Paris with Second Sidefaces Lined Background 2d x5 tied by poor BN of Townsville, Brisbane transit b/s, 'MODANE A PARIS/25/AOUT/86' TPO transit cds in red & Paris arrival b/s. [Again we have a rate that doesn't conform to Hugh Campbell's data. The most likely scenario is that it was short-paid 2d for a double-rate letter]
GERMANY: 1898 (May 14) sextuple-rate cover (reduced above the stamps) with scarce franking of Two Figures 2½d rose-pink strip of 4 & 5d purple-brown tied by poor Brisbane duplexes, Berlin arrival b/s of 20.6.98, ironed-out central horizontal fold.
INDIA: 1871 (Nov 24) cover from Maryborough with Chalons 6d x2 tied light Rays '96' (poor cds b/s), to "Guard GIPR/Hurdah Station/E India", three different Indian TPO d/s (two tiny tri-sected ones, one on the reverse) & 'HERDAH/JA8/71' arrival cds in red on the face, minor defects. [Most mail to India in this period is to military officers. GIPR = Great India Peninsular Railway]
INDIA: 1900 (July 11) 2½d rate cover addressed primarily in Pashtu (?) to "Punjaub/India" with ghastly BN cancels but very fine 'ALOOMBA' cds, Cairns & Tuticorin transit & 'NUR MAHAL' arrival b/s, a bit soiled & the flap repaired. [Punjabi is the principal language but this is an Arabic script. Pashtu is the language of Afghanistan & is also spoken in northern Pakistan. We expect the sender was an Afghan camel-driver. Aloomba is 1650km NNW of Brisbane, just south of Cairns. PO opened 1898]
IRELAND: 1870 (Dec 26; Boxing Day) cover to "Rathmines/Dublin" with Chalons 1d orange-vermilion x4 (two defective & three separated with scissors at the base; possibly imperf between?) & 2d blue tied by fine Rays '124' of 'CAMBOOYA' (b/s), Brisbane transit & light British 'H & K PACT/FE26/1870' arrival b/s, slightly truncated at left.
IRELAND: 1876 (Dec 21) double-rate cover to Dublin endorsed "Via Melbourne & Brindisi" with Chalons 2d pair & 6d x2 tied by very fine Rays '120' (rated RR on Chalons) with 'CAMBOOYA' cds alongside, Brisbane transit b/s & very fine 'TOO LATE.' h/s on the face, some blemishes & stains still attractive.
MALAYA: 1899 (May 26) use of 1d Scenic Postal Card 'Parliament House, Brisbane' with BN '215' & superb 'SOUTH BRISBANE' cds, to "Kwala Lumpar/Salangor/Straits Settlements", taxed with large '5/CTMS/T' h/s, very fine 'SINGAPORE' & 'KLANG' transit & 'KUALA LUMPUR/JY1/1899' arrival cds, characteristic discolouration of the board. [Selangor was one of the four Federated Malay States, and not part of the Straits Settlements]
MAURITIUS: 1904 (Dec 19) cover to Port Louis endorsed "p Messageries Maritimes/Via Melbourne" with Two Corners 2½d rose-pink tied by superb Rays '83' of 'MACKAY' (light cds alongside), Brisbane transit b/s & very fine marine sorter 'LIGNE T/PAQ FR No 3' d/s, 'MAURITIUS/JA22/92' arrival b/s, minor repaired tear at upper-left.
SCHLESWIG: 1898 (Apr 26) cover to a Danish resident of "Rorkjar/pr Tonder/Schleswig" with ½d & 2d tied by Brisbane duplex, overall soiling. One of the great destinations. [For the entire 19th century, Schleswig was subject to competing claims from Denmark & Germany. The matter was finally settled by the 1920 Plebsicite which resulted in partition, the northern sector going to Denmark, the areas south of Tonder going to Germany]
UNITED STATES: 1875 (June 2) cover to Ohio "via San Francisco" with Chalons 6d yellow-green x2 tied by light 'QL' cancels of Brisbane (central cds), very fine 'PAID ALL' h/s with fleurons in red applied at Sydney (b/s) & 'SAN FRANCISCO/ AUG/3/PAID ALL' cds in red, clipped corner at L/R. Ex Bernie Beston. [Stated only one other Queensland cover - also of 1875 - with this Sydney marking is recorded. Such usage was not recorded by Hugh Campbell]
UNITED STATES: 1884 (Apr 18) cover to Mississippi without route endorsement but correctly rated with First Sidefaces 4d & Second Sidefaces Lined Background 2d tied by BN '330' (rated R) of 'BOLLON' (fine cds alongside; RR - ERD) & 'PAID/ALL' h/s of Brisbane (b/s), 'SAN FRANCISCO CAL/PD ALL' b/s in red, minor soiling. PO 1.4.1881. [Bollon is 600km almost due W of Brisbane]
UNITED STATES: 1895 (Nov) cover to Maryland with Void Background ½d 1d x3 & 2d tied by very fine Rays '171' (rated R) of Tinana, 'REGISTERED/TINANA' h/s & 'REGISTERED/MARYBOROUGH' cds b/s, Baltimore arrival b/s, small corner defect & opened-out for display. [Tinana is 250km due N of Brisbane. Today it is a suburb of Maryborough]
