ESSAYS: Previously unrecorded essays with a frame that bears more than a passing resemblance to the famous Type 1 essays - see ACSC at page 2/1 - but with circular value tablets, & tiny coat-of-arms below a map of Australia that is drawn a little crudely but includes Tasmania! (which we note was omitted from the Type 1 essays), photographically reduced to stamp-size, in sepia & affixed to small cards with rounded corners 1) with vignette of "The Father of Federation" Sir Henry Parkes. [The vignettes were apparently separate pieces of art that were affixed within the map. The similarities with the Type 1 essays make it a tantalising speculation that they were drawn by the same artist. It would be unlikely, therefore, that these were submitted to the 1911 Post Office Stamp Design Competition. Our vendor recently acquired these items from a non-collector who claimed they had been in his family for generations]
ESSAYS: 2) with vignette of Edmund Barton, Australia's first Prime Minister (who resigned to become the first Chief Justice of the High Court), small fault on the backing mount at upper-right from where a staple has been removed.
ESSAYS: 3) with vignette of a magpie (the bird, not a rabid Collingwood supporter).
