BOER WAR: (Oct 16) illustrated advertising cover (featuring the Transvaal flag) to Cape Town with ZAR ½d (fault) tied by Johannesburg cds of 16OCT99, complete 'V [crown] R/OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW' label entirely (and unusually) on the reverse, exceptional strikes of the boxed 'STOPPED BY CENSOR/RETURN TO SENDER' & 'Undelivered for Reason Stated/TO BE RETURNED TO ADDRESS HEREON' h/s both in violet. Despite these instructions, the cover was apparently impounded in Natal - 'RETURNED LETTER OFFICE/3 4/00/NATAL' cds on the face - & finally returned in 1901 as evidenced by the Johannesburg arrival b/s of 14JAN01. A truly stunning printed matter rate cover, posted in the first week of the Second Boer War - the Boers declared war on 11.10.1899 - and amazingly with cds of 1899 1900 & 1901!
BOER WAR: 1899 usage to United States of GB 1d Postal Card with FPO cds, message headed "Camp De Aar Dec 4 99" and states "...we probably move to the relief of Kimberley tomorrow...", underpaid but untaxed.
BOER WAR: 1900 illustrated cover with printed 'HEADQUARTERS/Young Mens Christian Association/CANADIAN CONTINGENT/ON ACTIVE SERVICE WITH BRITISH FORCES/SOUTH AFRICA' & crossed-flags at upper-left, GB 1d lilac tied by indistinct FPO cds, to Canada with very fine strike of the oval 'CANADIAN CONTINGENT/APR 18 1900/SOUTH AFRICA' d/s in magenta, Montreal arrival "flag" b/s, readdressed to "Manitoulin Island/Ont", minor soiling & light staining on the reverse. A stunning exhibition item. [Manitoulin is the world's largest freshwater island]
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE: 1880 cover to Bombay "via England" (perverse!) with 1d x2, 'THREEPENCE' on 4d rose & 6d tied by Barred Numeral '2' cancels, faint London & very fine Indian 'SEA/POST OFFICE/ C ' transit b/s.
