An important item that shows how the 5d proof was defaced to create the master die proof for the series: illustrated in the DLR work by Frank Walton RDP at page 6251.
1892-99 Tablets ½d to £1 overprinted 'SPECIMEN', the 6d aged & the 2/6d toned, the high values very lightly mounted, Cat £750
1899-1900 De La Rue Pictorials ½d to 6d imperforate colour trials in the issued colours on unwatermarked paper. A unique and important set. (8)
68 separate colour trials were produced: each is unique, which causes us to believe that they are all die proofs, not plate proofs, reduced to stamp-size to enable the Agent-General to easily compare the trials for each denomination. All are illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP. [John Bell's 6d in bright ultramarine sold at the Prestige auction of 12.6.2010 for $2300. Mac Clarke's large 2d die proof in crimson - not illustrated in the Walton work - sold at the Prestige auction of 17.10.2008 for $5520]
