Another handy little collection notable for the many towns on values other than 1d & 2d, numerous better strikes including superb 'FLOWERDALE UPPER', fine 'GAWLER' & 'LADY'S BAY' and light but discernible 'POSTAGE PAID/LAUNCESTON TAS'. Lots of overlapping so careful inspection is sure to be rewarded. Also an attractive selection of Barred Numerals with a good number of First Allocations on Imperf Chalons, a few on Pictorials including bold '189' on 6d etc. (Qty few 100)
Alonnah: 'ALONNAH/31AU1912/TASMANIA' (ERD) largely fine strike on 1d Pictorial. Rated RRRR: cost $396 at our auction of 30/9/2000. From Mills Reef 20/12/1909. [On South Bruny Island]
Beulah Upper: manuscript "2nd/Office" on 2d Pictorial, part 'BEUL[AH]' arrival cds of May 1912. [Handbook Volume II states this was used at Beulah Upper after the change of name from Beulah State School in 1908; and that the 'BEULAH' cds was used at Beulah Upper from at least September 1911. Avery & Hardinge ascribe the mss cancel to Beulah Lower up to 1914]
Bronte: 'BRONTE/ AM/TASMANIA' light but obvious strike on ½d Pictorial. Rated RRRR: cost $396 at our auction of 30/9/2000. PO 1/8/1912. [A similar strike of 1913 sold for $506 at a recent postal auction]
Burnie: rubber 'MONEY ORDER OFFICE/21/APR/1931/BURNIE' four fine to very fine strikes in violet on airmail cover to England, an additional 3d tied by 'TELEGRAPH OFFICE/BURNIE' cds, flight cachet in violet on the reverse, vertical fold clear of the stamps. [The MOO cds is unrecorded by Avery & Hardinge]
Calder Road Upper: 'CALDER UPPER/18OC1910/TASMANIA' superb strike on 1d Pictorial. Rated RRRR: PO 1/8/1912. [A similar strike - the stamp with small tear - sold for $253 at a recent postal auction]
Camp Creek: 'CAMP CREEK/16JUL06/TASMANIA' largely very fine strike on 2d Pictorial. Rated RR: PO 1/8/1905; renamed Yolla 31/7/1906. [A similar strike sold for $187 at a recent postal auction]
Catamaran: 'CATAMARAN/DE14/00/TASMANIA' light but clear strike on 2d Pictorial. Rated RRR: sold for $577 at our auction of 30/9/2000. RO only 1/4/1897; closed 31/12/1902.
Comstock (2): 'COMSTOCK/ * /DE4/01/TASMANIA' very fine strike on 2d Pictorial. Rated RRRR: sold for $484 at our auction of 30/9/2000. RO only 12/8/1901; closed 31/3/1903.
Franklin: rubber double-circle 'PAID AT/2/AUG/(1923)/FRANKLIN TAS' largely fine arrival b/s on 1923 plain wrapper with 1d violet & endorsed "Return to/...Franklin/Tas", a second strike affected by the wrapper having been roughly opened. Rated RRRRR. [Unlisted by Hardinge (1996). We have previously offered an example dated 15/DEC/1922]
Lady Bay: 'LADY'S BAY/FE("2")/02/TASMANIA' very fine strike on 1d Pictorial pair. Rated RR. From Lady's Bay 1/7/1895; closed 5/10/1946.
Lady Bay: 'LADY BA[Y]/SP14/11/TASMANIA' ('S' removed) largely very fine strike on 1d Pictorial. Rated RRRR: a similar strike sold at a recent postal auction for $632. [The spelling on the datestamp was not corrected until 1911]
Lanena: 'LANENA/23JA13/TASMANIA' very fine strike on 'ONE PENNY' on 2d Pictorial. Rated RRR. PO 1/4/1911; renamed Blackwell 31/5/1968.
Legana: 'LEGANA/14MY13/TAS[MAN]IA' superb strike on 1d Pictorial. Rated RRR: sold for $253 at our auctionj of 30/9/2000. RO 1/4/1910; PO 1/4/1911.
Long Island: 'LONG ISLAND/NO1/02/TASMANIA' (defective 'L' of 'LONG' & 'T') superb strike on 2d Pictorial. Rated RRRR. RO 1888; PO 1/7/1893; closed 31/12/1903. [By an extraordinary coincidence, a virtually identical strike of the same date!! sold for $907 at a recent postal auction]
Mills Reef: 'MILLS REEF/16JAN06/TASMANIA' ('M'-'T' = 9mm; two-digit year) largely very fine strike on 2d Pictorial. Rated RRR. PO 1/2/1905; renamed Alonnah 20/12/1909. [On South Bruny Island]
Nicholls Rivulet (1): 'NICHOLLS RIVULET/21JU1910/TASMANIA' fine strike on 1d Pictorial. Rated RRR: a similar strike sold at a recent postal auction for $418. RO only 1/12/1908; closed 30/6/1913.
Osterly South: 'OSTERLY SOUTH/JU10/01/TASMANIA' almost very fine strike (the ink a bit watery & diffused) on 2d Pictorial (faults). Rated RRR: sold for $715 at our auction of 30/9/2000. RO only 15/12/1899; closed 31/10/1901.
Verona: 'VERONA/17SEP06/TASMANIA' good strike on 1d Pictorial. Rated RRR: a slightly better strike sold for $418 at a recent postal auction. From Havelock South as RO 1/8/1906; closed 31/8/1926.
