POST OFFICE IN SHANGHAI: 1919 Surcharges '$2' on $1 brown-purple with Surcharge Double Scott #K16a (SG 16a), 'US POS SERVICE SHANGHAI/ DEC23/CHINA' cancel, Cat $US8500 (7500). Ex John Wesley Thomas: sold for $US9775. Philatelic Foundation Certificate (1985). [NB: Scott prices this stamp at $US8500 mint, despite it being well recognised that it is much scarcer in used condition. This is reflected by Gibbons which prices SG 16a used at 1000 more than mint]
