Balance of the Trans-Atlantic Mail collection mostly between USA and Great Britain or France but a few to or from less usual countries including Cuba, Guatemala, Sweden, Denmark & German States, most are stampless and the others tend to have defective adhesives, excellent range of postal markings including Depreciated Currency & Supplementary Mail types, also a range of adhesives to 90c rose (fault) with New York Foreign Mail cork cancels, condition very mixed but a useful lot for the specialist.
1840 (Dec 7) partly cross-written entire headed "New York" to GB "pGreat Western" with superb oval 'FORWARDED THROUGH/GILPINS EXCHANGE/READING ROOM AND/FOREIGN LETTER OFFICE/N-YORK' b/s in red, rated "8" in black, fine 'BRISTOL/SHIP LETTER' h/s on the face, some reinforcing along folds.
1844 (March 13) stampless entire from GB with very fine oval 'L/MR15/A' d/s of Liverpool, to "Thomas Wynns late of Turks Islands/to be left at Tucker & Lauries", re-addressed to 'EDENTON/NC' (fine arrival cds), capsule 'Forwarded/by/GEO & JOHN LAURIE/NEW YORK' b/s in red.
1856 (May 21) stampless cover from Boston to Sweden via Prussian Closed Bag "per America", very fine '19' h/s in red (for credit to GB for carriage on British packet, applied in error) & mss "42" (divided between USA, GB, Belgium & Prussia), fair boxed 'AACHEN 316/FRANCO' h/s in red & boxed 'YSTAD' arrival d/s.
1857 (April 8) cover to GB with remarkable franking on reverse of Imperf 3c dull red Scott #11 upper-left corner block of 8 (4x2) with full margins (large at left and enormous at top) tied by 'REHOBOTH/ALA' cds in bluish ink, '5/N.YORK BR.PKT' cds in black (in error) on the face, some soiling, opened-out for display. [**Please note the description in the printed catalogue is inaccurate. The estimate has been amended to $1400 and the reserve to $1000**]
1859 (Aug 3) stampless cover from 'JOHNSONS RANCH/CAL' to GB endorsed "Paid/59" stated to be a special rate under the 1848 Postal Treaty with GB, very fine '3' h/s in red, a few minor blemishes. [With letter headed "Johnsons Ranch Sutter Co"]
1861 (Sep 28) use of 3c Envelope from 'STOCKTON/Ca' to Switzerland per Prussian Closed Mail taking almost a month to reach New York where it was treated as wholly unpaid being rated 23c, then "45"(kr) in Germany & "180"(rpn) on arrival, French-type 'SCHIFFSBUREAU/LUZERN' transit b/s & 'LOCARNO' arrival b/s, endorsements at top & base are probably not contemporary. [Prepayment of the international postage was optional but part-payment was not permitted]
1865 (Nov 23) stampless cover to Rhode Island from Italy with part-Messina cds, French-type 'ITALIE/LANSLEBOURG' cds & curved 'Br Service'-in-octagon h/s both in red, US 'MISSENT' h/s apparently applied at Portland Maine ('PORT 21 LAND/OR US 30 NOTES' Depreciated Currency cds).
1866 (Nov 19) mourning cover to France with 5c & 10c tied by bars cancels of 'NEW ORLEANS/LA' (cds alongside), endorsed "By the N.O.Json&G Northern RailRoad", four different French b/s.
1866 stampless Prices Current from GB to Boston with very fine 'BOSTON BR PKT/48' cds & unusually with separate 'IN US NOTES/65' Depreciated Currency h/s.
1867 mourning cover from GB to Illinois with 6d only & 'INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID' h/s, US '3/CENTS' & '31/US NOTES' Depreciated Currency h/s, 'CHICAGO/ILL' arrival cds on the face, minor defects.
1868 entire from Spain to Boston "Via Queenstown" with 20c dull lilac pair (rounded upper-right corner), 'MALAGA' cds at right & 'MADRID' transit b/s, 'BOSTON.AM.PKT/10' arrival cds in black.
1869 unstamped cover to GB with fine 'NEW YORK/PAID ALL' cds & boxed 'SUPPLEMENTARY/MAIL' h/s both in red, flap fault. [With contents. Supplementary Mail was a late bag requiring payment of double the postage rate]
1870 (c.) cover from China to San Francisco (arrival b/s in red) "Per China/&/New York" with 1869 Pictorials 10c tied by segmented cork cancel, almost fine 'POD US CON GENL/FEB/12/SHANGHAI' cds alongside, a few minor blemishes.
1870 (June 25) stampless entire to France "pStr St Laurent" rated "4" in blue & '8' (decimes), very fine 'GB/2F___' accountancy h/s.
1871 (Oct 11) cover to Switzerland with 3c green pair & 10c (faults) tied by target cancels & superb 'COMFORT/TEX' cds, fine strike of unusual unframed 'NEW YORK/REGISTERED' cds in red, boxed '[C]HARGEE' h/s, 'FRAUBRUNNEN' arrival b/s, endorsed at top "Return receipt demanded" making this a very early Avis de Reception item, closed tear at top.
1874 mourning outer from Spain to New York with 1pta grey tied by indistinct cancel, 'CADIZ' cds at left & 'ESTAFETA DE CAMBIO/MADRID' b/s, London transit in red & 'NEW YORK/DUE 3/US CURRENCY' cds on the face.
1875 (May) cover from Ireland with 1d x3 only & '190'-in-diamond cancels & fine boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID' h/s, endorsed "Due 13c" & with 'NEW YORK/13/US NOTES' Depreciated Currency cds.
1875 (Aug 22) use of 3c green Envelope to Sweden uprated with very fine 7c orange (cancelled in transit at New York) & fine 'ELLISON BAY/WIS' cds, opened a bit roughly at back & not affecting the very fine appearance.
1876 (c.) use to Schwerin-Mecklenburg of Centenary 3c Envelope with 2c & 5c tied by cork cancels, 'NEW YORK/SUP/PAID' Supplementary Mail cds alongside, 'AUSG' arrival b/s. [From about 1873 payment of the late fee was required in stamps]
