1881-84 covers to General AC Jones the American Consul in Nagasaki Japan 1) 1881 mourning cover - with enclosed death notice - with 3c green x3, 28˝mm 'NAGASAKI/JAPAN' transit & 'YOKOHAMA/*' arrival b/s, the Nagasaki cds & one of the stamps damaged on opening; 2) 1881 House of Representatives envelope (roughly opened) with 3c green pair & 'WASH DC/CONGRESS' cds; 3) 1883 from San Francisco "pArabic" with 5c Grant, very fine strikes of the tiny 'YOKOHAMA/JAPAN' transit (another part-strike on the face) & 'NAGASAKI/JAPAN' arrival b/s; 4) & 5) 1884 covers from New Haven (roughly opened) & from Washington (with superb 'SMITHSONIAN/INSTITUTION' cds in magenta) both with very fine 'YOKOHAMA/*' transit & 'NAGASAKI/JAPAN' arrival b/s. 1883-84 four letters to General AC Jones American Consul in Nagasaki Japan 1) on 'USS Trenton' notepaper (with matching envelope, apparently delivered by hand) advising the ship's band would play for the ladies of the Lawn Tennis Club!; 2) headed "USFS Enterprise/Nagasaki" & signed "JLDavis"; 3) headed "US Consulate General/Yokohama" & signed "HS Van Buren"; and 4) from the secretary of the Governor of Maine James Blain thanking the general for his support (Blain lost the presidential election to Grover Cleveland). [Alexander Caldwell Jones graduated 16th in his class of 17!, rose to Brigadier-General during the Civil War, and was US Consul at Nagasaki 1880-85 & at Chinkiang from 1886 unitl his death on 13/1/1898] (Qty 5 items)
