Bundle of mostly pre-1890s covers with some better frankings including 1873 with 3d orange, 6d & 1/- pair, 1874 with 6d & 9d x3, 1884 with 3d orange pair & Stamp Duty 3/- purple/blue (torn before being affixed) etc, also noted 1882 with Bell 1d & boxed 'UNCLAIMED AT/RICHMOND' h/s, 1877 & 1879 covers with 'UP TRAIN/MG3' or '.../GM4' (error) b/s etc, condition very mixed. 1870s covers from goldmining towns of Black Hill, Clunes, Trentham & Castlemaine - the last containing Devonshire Reef Gold Mining letter & 'SCRIP CERTIFICATE' - also 1855 outers with Woodblock 6d single ir pair, & 1877 cover from Digby. Ex Rod Moreton. (7)
Selection of 1860s to 1880s covers with various Laureate frankings including 1d circular rate, 2d on Valentine envelope, 2d & 4d x2 with Melbourne "killers", 2d strip of 3 & 6d to Tasmania, 6d cancelled with '52' of Launceston, four registered items, numeral and duplex interest, condition very mixed. Useful group including 1856 entire Geelong-Melbourne with Half-Length 1d & 3d, 1870s covers to New Zealand carried by various ships (8) etc, condition variable. (13)
1843 (March 28) stampless entire from GB to "Geelong/Port Phillip/NSWales" rated "1/4" (double-rate) in red & "6" in black, Falmouth cds & oval 'PAID SHIP LETTER/LONDON' d/s both in red on the face, oval 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/AU*17/1843/MELBOURNE' b/s in red. Unusually fine inwards item.

1847 entire from Melbourne (b/s) to "Mount Gambier" rated "1/-", fine 'THE GLENELG/PORT PHILLIP' transit b/s, minor soiling.
1852 entire to "Oaklands/Mount Gambier" headed "McCraig's Station/three miles past the Grange" with fine 'GRANGE/VICTORIA' b/s & rated "1s1d", light vertical fold.
1857 part-outer to England with exceptional franking of a very fine Woodblock 6d orange corner example Serpentine Roulette 10 at top & Serrated Roulette 18-19 elsewhere SG 61 tied by superb BN '1', very fine 'FALMOUTH SHIP LETTER' cds on face & reverse. Ex Rod Moreton. [The stamp is Pos 1 from the lower pane]
1857-61 three covers each with the stamps cancelled by manuscript lines or squiggles & endorsed on the flaps "Clunes/12 dec" (1857; PO opened -/10/1857; the flap can be opened-out), "Wannon/Feby 20 1861" (PO opened 1/2/1861) or "Euroa/24 7 60" (the datestamp may have been lost), the second item torn across the face. 1859 cover to Adelaide (arrival cds on the face) with fine Shilling Octagonal Perf 12 tied by bold BN '1' of Melbourne (b/s), all-over soiling. Scarce inter-Colonial usage.
1861 OHMS entire to 'AVOCA' (b/s) with good strike of the rare boxed 'PAID AT/COCHRANE' h/s, oval transit b/s of 'DUNOLLY' & 'MARYBOROUGH'. Ex Rod Moreton.
1872 cover from New Zealand with 3d Chalon tied by Wellington duplex, addressed "BLHouston Esq/Club/Melbourne", numerous endorsements on reverse including "Not a member of the Melbourne Club", "Do Do Athenaeum & Yorick Clubs", "Not known at Union Club", "Not known Port Phillip Club Hotel" etc etc, the flap torn. A marvellous social history document.
1899 cover to Scotland, the rear panel with all-over illustration of the Royal Hotel, opened a little roughly but not affecting the reverse.
